Lightning south of TucsonLong exposures of lightning shot on a Nikon D700 near Tucson, AZ.
Date: 08/13/2008
This series was shot with my Nikon 35-70 F2.8 AF lens. I got the lens from my dad when he gave me his old F4 and accessories. It's an older AF lens, which just happens to work great on the new D700. Unfortunately, it does't like to focus at infinity. When manually focusing, you have to set the lens to infinity, then back it off a hair to get it to focus just right, so it took a little practice before any of my landscape shots started coming out in focus. If you zoom in on the full size versions of these images, the detail and sharpness is awesome. Keep in mind that the lens is mounted on a somewhat flimsy tripod that was blowing in a 15-20mph wind. Most shots are between 15 and 30 seconds at about F5.6. Definitely log in and check out the full size versions of these.

This is image is another 1/20 sec handheld shot, so I'm surprised by Alyx's face being mostly in focus. I actually like this shot despite the flaws. Also keep in mind that these are RAW format images with absolutely zero enhancement or improvement. I simply used NikonView to convert them to JPEGs for posting here. I'm still trying to figure out the best way to manage RAW images, and I currently have no good computer monitor to use for color correction or other enhancements, so you're looking at raw images here. Some images were also captured as JPEGs on the highest quality setting. For anyone interested you can see all the original capture settings in the detailed EXIF data below each picture...just be sure to click "details".

Shutter Speed 1/60 sec
I've never even heard of something like ISO 65536000 until now. I just wanted to see how high the film speed setting on this camera would go. Now I know. This camera is so good I'm almost afraid of it.
Dark and ominous evening storm approaching from the east.
Date: 08/08/2008
The interesting thing about this image, aside from the lightning strike and being slightly out of focus, is that this is shot at an ISO film speed equivalent value of 65,536,000 with a shutterspeed of 1/60 sec on a very dark evening. This kind of handheld low-light shot is simply not possible with a conventional film camera, but the full frame CCD sensor in the Nikon D700 is so sensitive to light it can perform some amazing photographic feats. The low-light photography characteristics of the D700 in general are much different than real film, but I am beginning to think they are much better.
Evening storm hitting Arivaca.Lightning afterglow at super-high film speed
Date: 08/08/2008
Another crazy low-light shot. I was testing the speed of the shutter release to see of I could snap pictures of lightning at normal shutter speeds. My biggest complaint with digital cameras has always been that they don't take the damned picture when you press the button. Well, once you figure this camera's focusing modes out, that problem is no more. As you can see from this and several other pictures, I had no trouble with shutter release lag.

Gordon drinking from the bird bath.Overexposed image of my dog (Gordon) drinking from the bird bath.
Date: 08/08/2008
My sloppy technique is obvious here...I was shooting aperture priority and was still trying to figure out how to change the f-stop. Only minutes earlier I discovered that you have to set the lens to f22 (the red number) in order for the camera to control the lens...before that I couldn't even take a picture with the thing because it kept flashing an error message at me. Sigh.....the learning curve is a bit steep, but it will be worth it.

Further proof that there is not much (if any) shutter lag on the D700. The more I use it the more I love it. It is definitely a big heavy camera though. The main reason I got it was because I wanted to be able to use my old Nikon lenses and I wanted to get back into serious photography without ANY of the compromises associated with digital photography. If you're not serious about photography, get a cheap 6 or 8 megapixel Canon point-and-shoot. The cheap Canons are an amazing value these days and produce phenomenal pictures for the money. Otherwise, I think the D700 is the best camera you can currently get for the money. Hopefully the images I will soon be posting will make that more apparent than this first batch.

Date: 08/08/2008
I love this photo, but I hate the fact that I messed it up. The camera did everything in its power to pull this shot off, but my lack of experience with the Nikon autofocus system is apparent. This is about the hardest kind of shot you can do with a camera though, so I don't feel to bad. Shooting a fast moving target, backlit by a bright sunset is really hard to do, and this IS the first day I've had the camera.
Storms west of Arivaca
Date: 08/08/2008
Most of my shots from this first day were done on full program mode, where the camera decides everything itself. This is one such shot. I should probably enable "Active D-Lighting" as it would have brightened up the landscape. Usually I prefer to do that kind of postprocessing in Photoshop so it can easily be undone, but I'm starting to realize that the reason you want a great digital camera is so you don't have to waste hours adjusting curves in Photoshop. Getting to know this camera better should lead to a massive improvement in my images.

A car drove by, just as lightning struck, leaving an obvious light trail, and there's some faint red streaks in the lower middle that I think were caused by the passing car's tail lights illuminating the rain from below the crest of the hill after it passed.
